call the company and ask, or look in the Harris Directory or the Thomas register for current titles and names. Once you get a name and a title, call the company and tell them what you want to do and ask if Mr. or Mrs. so-and-so is still the Human Resources (or whatever appropriate position) Director. That tells them you did your homework and you will they will be much more likely to give you the information quickly.

That also tells the person you are sending the resume to that you did your homework, and they expect that at a minimum. If you don't do that then plan on your resume getting pitched very quickly.

I don't think there is anything wrong with using "to whom is may concern". I work in finance and I use that terminology when I'm unsure of whom might receive my letter. These days especially,I think some people try to be different on their cover letter and resume by exerting a different tone/language than the norms seen in business, however you still want to stay within professional parameters. I applaud those who try to stand out and be different, however you want to be cautious about how you might be perceived as well.

A second option could be "Dear [Company Name]".

Hope this helps :)
