I have been a Mainframe COBOL programmer for 3 years. I have a job offer also as a Mainframe Programmer but the language is not COBOL. It is NATURAL programming and ADABAS. It also runs in mainframe. I now have to decide if I am going to accept the job offer. Would there be no disadvantages on my end and on my career if I accept this offer? Please help me because I am not familiar with Natural/ADABAS. Thanks in advance

Take the job! They've decided they want you. That means you have the chance to learn something new. This world of information technology changes really fast, so to be successful you have to learn new stuff all the time.

The only reason to stay at the old job would be if they are giving you a chance to learn a LOT about DB2, so you can become a real expert. DB2 experts are in high demand, but you're going to have to learn to use DB2 with other technologies (like websphere, java, etc) as well as COBOL.

Good luck.

Hi Scooter, just past mornin here, and the thought is certainly decent. While I don't always wake with a smile, I do say "Thank You" and even if I don't smile all the time, if I don't act at least civil to others I should expect the same in return.

i don't know how they have selected you as you don't know NATURAL. One thing you have to decide that if you can face challenge to learn NATURAL and if the offer is good then you can go with it.

I don't see any harm going with NATURAL it will add a value to your profile. but if you feel confident about COBOL then stick with it

And Last thing I don't find its helpful to give the difference between both of above language as it really doesn't fit in this area
