Im currently in secondary school, Im choosing the courses to apply for college. Im planning to study 3 A Levels in college which are:

*Computing AS/A2 Level
*Graphic Communication AS/A2 Level
*Maths (Pure and Statistics) AS/A2 Level

And possibly 2 more courses (not A Level). There are Web Design courses, but you have to be an adult for some reason.

My questions are:

1. If I want to be a Web Developer should I go to University and study Computer Science?
2. Does Computer Science open up more paths to different jobs?
3. Can Computer Science get you a decent job with a decent pay?

I really need some guideance to becoming a Web Developer, so any sort of advice would be very helpful! :D

Thanks alot!

First of all, be clear about the difference between a web developer and a web designer. Web designer doesn't program, and doesn't even have to know HTML - they're responsible for the look and feel of the website, page layouts, etc. Okay, now I've said that.

1. Yes. Absolutely. A true web developer is a coder, programmer and developer. Sure, anyone can put together a nice little information website through HTML and make it look okay. But a web developer, at least one that makes money needs to be able to code - in PHP, in .Net, java or other languages. The more complex web applications are done in a multi-tier level, so you'd need to build presentation layer, business logic layer and database layer. That's best done in university.

2. Yup. Coding is the obvious one. But you can also go into testing, project management, business analyst, database administrator, tech support, management, operations and on and on. I started out as a coder, but now manage the development group. I haven't coded in 10 years.

3. Yup. If you're good at it. An average developer in Canada might make $60,000. If you're good at it, and become a senior developer, you get into the $80k to $120k range.

If you're just starting out on the Web design path, this is your stop. The beginning HTML resources cover the basics of HTML and building a Web page. The classes and tutorials will help you get started. The glossary will explain new terms. Plus you can learn more about the basic software you need to create a Web page.

Once you've got the basics of HTML down, you can move down the path to Advanced HTML. Advanced HTML includes tables and frames, DHTML, and Cacacading Style Sheets. There are more advanced scripting tools available to the advanced HTML programmer. Plus, you might want to learn more about cookies and updating your site with mutimedia.

Once you're an expert of basic HTML and advanced HTML, you'll have a lot of the skills you need to move into Web development as a career. But there the path forks. You can choose design or programming. It's also possible to do both.

I think that Computer Science is currently a good and prestigious field to go for...Yes, it opens many horizons and it might include Web design as a sub-discipline...However, the only concern in my reckoning is that this field (more than anytime before) is developing very quickly which means that academic study is not the end of the story...You've to follow up with everything new in the field...For example, the HTML (as a language used for website design) is currently losing ground because there're many easy and user-friendly ways/techniques of website design that have been replacing HTML. Few years ago, HTML has been an important thing to study...Now, it's an old-fashioned thing!

Web developer will get you the average wage (£24,000), but a senior developer can get up to £45,000. Being a software developer will earn you a lot more. Around £25,000 at the start £60,000 for senior developer.

Program Developer are these guys who develops software applications..(program those that you utilize to your procedure like Calculator, media participant and many others ) internet Developer are those guys who develops internet sites and internet applications...(these which u use by means of internet)... If you wish to pick between these two fields then surely you must go for internet progress discipline bcoz current trend is extra focusing on the development of net applications
