How efficient submitting a profile online is compared to applying for a specific position?

I've been applying a lot these days and in some cases I just opened an account and filled in with information and uploaded résumé and cover letters. But I'm wondering whether in case of an opening, they look only for the people who applied for that specific position or do they include all the open profiles?
Anyone who knows how it works on the other side?

Absolutely, hands down, you should only apply for specific openings you've found that match your qualifications. Otherwise, you are simply wasting your time. Employers don't have the time to keep banks of resumes and plow through them when they have an opening, hoping to find someone qualified - that's not how it works.
What employers do is advertise a position and only consider responses for that particular position. Occasionally, they may have multiple similar positions and they will consider applicants for all of them, but only if the positions are similar.
Be sure to tailor your cover letter and resume specifically for each job. This is the best way to get your resume read.
When you do a very targeted job search such as this, you'll find you'll get more interviews and they will be jobs you have a realistic chance at getting.
Good luck.

Definitely apply for specific jobs. Most companies don't rely on profiles and searches unless the market is pretty hot, and they can't get enough good resumes. In most cases, enough people will apply for any given job and the company will have enough to choose from without searching profiles.
Remember that HR people don't want to waste time. If you apply for a specific job, they know you want it and they know you are still active. For profiles, they don't know if you have already found a job or not, or are even interested in the job.
