This is the 64,000 dollar question in IT. It is an iterative 'do loop'. "We're not going to hire you, no matter how many degrees you have, unless you have experience. " "But how can I then ever get a job, because I have no experience?"

There are only two ways to break out of the loop. Either find a low paying (or free) intern job at a large IT firm, and then impress everyone with how hard you are willing to work (don't try to impress them with 'how smart you are' - in their eyes you're a new college grad, still 'wet behind the ears' - remember they were all once new college grads too). What you are expected to do as an intern is to listen, learn, and be willing to contribute in any way you can. It doesn't mean you have to be the 'water boy or water girl'.(not even an intern has to put up with that BS). It just means you are there to learn the ropes - everyone knows that. Any task you are given, do the best you can, and ask for more. Yea, I know the pay sucks, but if you hang in there, you can really get a decent job. A collegue of mine at Microsoft was an intern with them for two summers, before he got hired - and ended up being hired by them as soon as he graduated.

Interning doesn't appeal to you? Then the only other way to break out of the do loop is to work as a volunteer IT person at your local Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) or non-profit. Again the pay is either low or non-existent, but experience is experience, and often you can get very, very glowing references for the work you do with these organizations.

You may be thinking "do I have to do it this way - oh man, that sucks that I have to work for such low pay". I'm telling you, unless you get experince of some kind, very few people in the IT industry want to hire you. Look at it from their perspective. They are not going to trust their multi-million dollar systems to a unproven, rookie college grad.

You do have a third option. You could always become a millitary communications officer in one of the services. The upside is that the military will give you all the experience you could ever want and then some. The downside... well, you have a VERY good chance of going to the sunny vacation spot we all know as Iraq.

Those are your options. I hope it helps.
