I've worked for several years as a software developer, and I can feel that I am burning out. I've lost the spark and I'm losing my career direction a bit. The first thing I've been trying to decide is if it is the particular company or the profession in general. Has anyone else been through this?

I can feel your pain. The cause could be the company if you generally like what you do. You must be good at what you do, otherwise you could not keep the job for several years in this competitive work environment.

I became a burnout years ago because I worked long hours day in and day out. I had no other life except work. When I realized what was happening to me, I've decided to go home after the normal work hours regardless I had some work left to do. I found other activities rather than work, some with friends or some by myself but enjoyable nevertheless.

Don't over-work, go home in time to do other activities, don't listen to company gossips and maintain your good health.

If all fails, find a good therapist and talk to him/her. There may be other reasons hidden under your consciousness that are making you blue.

Ask yourself:

Do u still want to code for years to come or you want to take a different responsibility on job... like in designing software or leading a team etc.

or do you want to do something different altogether ?

Initial years at work and working hard and long hours is understood to further onces career, no matter which field you are in.

Working smart is a better option always. Work normal hours and take part in other activities as well than work.

Hope this helps.

If you don't hesitate to find out that you feel passion to develop software regardless of the programing language, most likely is the particular company environment that is affecting your motivation and performance. I hope this helps.
